Area Code 434

In 1947, AT&T established area code 804 as one of the original Virginia numbering plan areas under the North American Numbering Plan. The code covered a broad swath of central and eastern Virginia, serving the Richmond metropolitan area and extending south and west into rural communities. By the late 1990s, growing telecommunications demand in the Lynchburg and Charlottesville markets pushed 804 toward exhaustion. The Virginia State Corporation Commission petitioned the Federal Communications Commission for relief. On June 1, 2001, the FCC authorized area code 434 as a geographic split of 804. The new code served the southern and western portions of the former 804 territory, including the cities of Lynchburg, Charlottesville, Danville, and Forest.
